Course Syllabus

This course is an introduction to the major themes, concepts and definitions of the science and art of sociology. In a broad sense, the course will cover the basic tenets of sociological inquiry, and how the impacts of social forces help shape communal and individual behaviors and attitudes. Topics studied include socialization, social interactions, cultures and sub-cultures, groups, social structures, systems theory, deviance, social control, inequality and power, social class, race, gender, institutions (political, economic, global, educational, family, religious, etc...) and social change. Students are expected to learn the basic concepts, theories and perspectives of sociology and see how those concepts apply to the broader social landscape as well as to their immediate community and life. This syllabus describes only the assignments and calendar due dates. It's handy, but it doesn't take the place of the regular PDF version of the written syllabus which everyone should read before beginning the course.
