Can I do it?

Yes! The Message Students Who feature allows you to send messages to students directly from an assignment in the gradebook!

Examples of how you might use this feature:

Send positive reinforcement to students who submit an assignment on time.
Remind students to get started on a test, so they have time to complete the test before it closes in Canvas.
Inform students who scored low on an assignment of options to revise and resubmit.
Send a grading timeline update to students who have ungraded assignments.

This tip aligns with sections 1 & 3 of the BTC Course Design Tool. Specifically, this feature helps you provide students with “regular and substantive interaction (RSI)” and “personalized, relevant, and timely feedback” in your courses.

How do I do it?

Open the course Gradebook.
Locate the assignment and hover over the column header and click the Options icon.
Select Message Students Who from the drop-down menu.
Select the category of students you want to message from the For students who... drop-down menu.
- Have submitted
  - Check All, Graded, or Not Graded
- Have not yet submitted
  - If applicable, check Skip excused students when messaging
- Have not yet been graded
- Score more than
- Score less than
Type a message in the Message field and click the Send button.

Note: For privacy, each student in the message category will receive an individual message.
